40 Days Of Prayer - Day 10

He Gave Us Family

Scripture

Galatians 6:9-10
“And let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

Devotion

These may well be familiar verses, and there’s so much to pull from them for our lives today! What stands out to me now, in thinking about being the church, and Jesus’s words that "...they will know we are His disciples by our love for one another" (John 13:35), is that we are called to do good to everyone, but especially to those who are of the household of faith. We are called to do good to those of the household of faith “especially”, so, to an extent or degree deserving of special emphasis (according to an online dictionary).

Can you see how ideal that is - for the family of God to show each other good in the highest manner? Can you see how attractive that would be to the world - a family that is good to each other beyond all plausibility? Can you feel the love that Christ has for His church in and amongst us?

These verses are a reminder to me that walking out my faith is not merely to show compassion to the lost; although, to be clear, that is a part of it. I am to walk out my faith by serving within our church family, blessing those who serve God too, for His glory!

I can do good to those who are of the household of faith in praying for them, by name! I can bring meals, or move furniture, or babysit someone’s kids. I can join in on missions week, email the pastors to say thanks or purpose to connect with an unfamiliar face after every service! Intuitively, we know how to “do good” to others; remember that God calls us to that towards everyone, but “...especially to those who are of the household of faith”! This is a family I want to be apart of!

Prayer

"Heavenly Father, thank You for our church family. Help us to glorify You in the way we treat each other. Help us to see each other, as individuals, and to show care in our actions. Father, help me to make connections and share blessings with my brothers and sisters in the Lord! I want to be a part of Your family, and I want to shine Your love to all others, so they might know we are Your disciples. Today, help me to do good to those around me, most especially those in the household of faith! In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen."
