40 Days Of Prayer - Day 13

Actively Still

Scripture

Psalm 46:10
“Be still and know that I am God.”

Devotion

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past two years, it’s that resting in God, being able to trust God…it doesn’t happen while I sit idle. I’m not one who is in the know about what Bible words mean in Greek or Hebrew, but when I read the Bible, I have noticed that to “know” that He is God requires being actively still. Can I give you a few examples?

  • “Let us then APPROACH God’s throne of grace with confidence…” Hebrews 4:16
  • “PRAY continually” 1Thes 5:17
  • “...that you may love the Lord your God, LISTEN to his voice, and HOLD FAST to him.” Deut 30:20
  • “...if you look for it as for silver and SEARCH for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:4-5
  • “REMEMBER those earlier days after you had received the light” Hebrews 10:32

I found these and so many more that it just struck me how active we have to be in order to “Be still and know that he is God.” We need to approach him, go to him, be near him - we can’t know him if we stay far away. We need to pray…no matter how awkward, we need to be in communication with him.

No relationship thrives without communication. We need to listen to him and hold fast…this one baffles me, i.e. learning how to listen to God is a challenge, but we won’t learn if we don’t do.

Search for him - this I have learned greatly in my last 2 years of just reading the gospels slowly and writing down what I notice Jesus to be like…i.e. then I know what God is like. And remembering - oh how important this one is. To purposefully choose to remember where God has been faithful in the past so that we will be able to trust him in the dark.

There are beautiful ones, too, that I didn’t mention. Things like: Casting anxiety and know his peace; examining the scriptures and understanding him more; crying out and knowing his comfort; delight in him and he will give; meditate, humble yourself, repent…the list is endless.

In this time of Lent, where we are thinking about Christ’s huge sacrifice for us, let’s take baby steps to learn to be actively still so that we will know that he is God.
